We dream to hope.

Our house that fall was filled with creamy whites and dark reds, as thin plastic tried to make up for a lack of orange leaves blowing in windows.

It was Thanksgiving day. My siblings and I ran aroud the house in anticipation for doorbell rings as music played fom upstairs.

When evryone arrived we went to the back to play soccer but but it was too confined to really feel fre. So we took turns asking our parents until they caved in and told us we could venture out onto the golf course.

We dream to remember

We split into previously rehearsed teams and began. The grass was soft and we weren't shy inour overzealous sliding. Oftentimes we'd get caught by each other trying to be too fancy with the ball and ended up tripping over our own feet.

One of us proclaimed halftime. We realized no oneknew the score. We called it even and resumed quickly. It wasn't often we saw each other.

We all looked up at the sky a lot. It was kind of big that day, and besides we weren't used to our worlds being so open.

We dream to clear our minds

More than once I sprinted when I knew I couldn't get the ball. I wanted to feel the slight, reverberating burn on my lungs. It made me think I was running away. Running to a big adventure, to a real one, in the west. Toward the sun.

We often laughed even though we weren't really talking. We'd catch each other's eye and find the corners of our mouths lifting without knowing why.

We dream to rehearse.

The surface of play was sloping, rolling, hilly. It was green. Close to us was one of those small lakes they put in the middle of courses so you buy more golf balls. One time we kicked the ball too far and it rolled down a hill and went into the lake.

Each of us ran to the water and stared mystified at our reflections. We looked across the lake and the emerald grass contrasted nicely with the blue sky.

We took an orange stake out of the ground and I bent down, torso suspended above the water, while my broher held my feet. My friend held his feet, and so on. We all wanted to feel a part of it.

We dream to forget

The air was cool after I toook my swweatshirt off and laid it on the grass. I was starting to get itchy. Suddenly a shape appeared running up and down the distant hills. It called to us, telling us it was time for dinner.

We all looked at each other sadly. Till next year. None of us wanted to go in even though we were very hungry and thirsty. But we knew a lot of work had gone into the meal. Besides we all knew we would get a chance to talk about our little game when we held hands around the table and said what we were thankful for.
